Beach Trip
Beach Trip 2010 – Thursday 20th May 4pm – 8pm.
We set off for Fraisethorpe beach at 4:15pm, 3 members of staff, 11 children aged 8 to 15 and one of the parents in a minibus. On the half hour journey the children played games with each other; Eye spy, looking out for strange landmarks and animals and “How long have we got left?” (Just to bug the driver).
Upon seeing the coastline before getting to our destination the children started getting excited and restless a few of them looked awestruck and you could tell on their faces that they were excited to nearly be there.
We parked up on the cliff top and handed out the pack lunches to the children; this was followed be a mad dash to the beach. Once on the sand most of the children ran straight for the sea which was a fair distance away; a good 100 meters. One of the staff ran after them to go splash about in the sea and you could hear screams of laughter from them from the opposite side of the beach.
During the 2 and a half hours on the beach the children and staff enjoyed various games of Tag, Frisbee, Passing the ball, Football, Playing in the sea, Rock climbing, Building sand castles and burying each other under the sand.
At the end of the evening we all collected our rubbish to be thrown away and made our way back up the cliff towards the minibus. The children were wet and covered with sand sat in the van. We had a surprise in store as we had decided to take the children to the main part of Bridlington to buy ice cream and use the amusements.
When we arrived at Brid the youths get excited again despite being worn out from playing on the beach. Everyone had different types of ice cream from the amusements, Mint Choc, Raspberry, and Vanilla and so on… Some of the children went to play on the UFO catchers \ crane games and quite a lot of soft toys were won (£1 infinite play till you win).
After about 30min in Bridlington eating our ice creams we realized we were running a bit behind schedule so we got the children back onto the minibus. We called the parents to tell them we were going to be 30min late.
When we got back into Hull the parents were waiting outside of Link Up and the children’s faces lit up again. As they all got off the mini bus they thanked the staff and ran to their parents and kept shouting back to us, “When are we going again?” We smiled back and said nothing.
We have decided to do this on a regular basis during the warmer part of the year, as it has touched the youths and given a few of them a new experience that they will become a treasured memory to them.
